MGAL

Microbial Genomics and Analytical Laboratory

Important Update Regarding Project Submissions:

Please be advised that MGAL is implementing a PAUSE on all new project submissions until August 25, 2025, effectively immediately. This moratorium does not apply to instrument use or mass spec services. These services will continue to be available during regular business hours.

During this time, we are focusing on addressing our current workload and refining our operational management process to better serve you. If we’re currently working on your project, rest assured that we will continue moving forward as planned. If we are in communication about your project, please reach out to discuss the best time to submit your samples. For any new project requests, we kindly ask you to wait until after the moratorium period to submit them.

Mahalo for your patience and understanding!

For more information, please see our moratorium notice or reach out to MGAL staff.

Business hours:
Monday to Thursday, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Please contact us at mgal@hawaii.edu for after-hour arrangements with MGAL staff.

About Us

The Microbial Genomics and Analytical Laboratory (MGAL) at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa is one of three core facilities supported by the COBRE ICEMHH grant and functions as a dedicated, centralized molecular and analytical core. Our core serves the UH community as well as outside users. We are located in the new Life Sciences Building near the Kennedy Theater. MGAL houses the necessary instrumentation to provide a wide variety of services, such as high-throughput DNA/RNA extractions, amplicon library preparation using the Earth Microbiome Project primers, natural product and small molecule analysis, and culturing and storage of microbial strains. We offer low-cost fees for user-operated instruments and full-service molecular requests carried out by trained technicians.
Because MGAL is supported by the NIH COBRE ICEMHH grant, all users must sign an MGAL User Agreement prior to utilizing the facility and its resources. This MGAL User Agreement should be signed by the Principal Investigator and must be updated annually. Principal Investigators are responsible for providing MGAL with a list of authorized users covered under their MGAL User Agreement. Signed MGAL User Agreements will be accepted via campus mail, email (mgal@hawaii.edu), and in-person.
